Spot-on post, Patrick! I’m just starting out on Foursquare for no other reason than I think I should.

Very useful is the answer you’ve provided to the number one question — that instead of asking “Do you want to let everyone know where you are all the time?”, the better question is, “Would you like a unique opportunity to connect with your contacts — in real life?”

Thanks for the comment, Fred. No great opportunities yet. A “near miss” this morning, though when a friend from my home town and I checked in minutes apart at New York Penn Station. Given the nature of one’s fleeting presence at a train station, the opportunity at a place like that will be rare. I hope that as more contacts join, the chances of a real opportunity will arise. Like you, I have been playing with foursquare since the blackberry app was introduced a few weeks ago and agree with your analysis.
