Jason Eiseman, Computer Automation Librarian at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt, shared a wonderful tutorial about the basics (and some advanced stuff) of RSS. It is geared to law librarians, but it is a great resource for anyone who is interested in RSS. LawyerKM first learned of Jason’s tutorial in a recent article by Tom Mighell and Dennis Kennedy called RSS Resources You Can Use: Automated Web Surfing for Lawyers published in Law Practice Today.
Watch the tutorial and you will benefit in (at least) two ways. (1) You’ll realize how knowledge management is not just about capturing, organizing, and re-using an organization’s intellectual capital; its also about getting the right information to the right people at the right time (and the lawyers in your firm will love you for it). (2) Jason uses a great (relatively) new tutorial-building method known as Screencasting.
Screencasting involves capturing the activity on one’s computer screen — not just clipping a “snapshot,” but recording the movement on the screen. Audio is often captured at the same time (as is the case with Jason’s tutorial). Once the content is captured, it is converted to a compact file format (such as Flash) so that it is easy to download or post to websites. A great tool for converting tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge.
